MH gave the review of CAN - USA... it doesn't matter if we play well
if we don't score, as we also almost didn't against El Sal. Both we
and Mexico are in danger of getting pipped, like we did last time, and
now there are two teams laying in wait. We absolutely have to beat
PAN and CRC now, which for us is a tall order. We have to find goals,
and players who can take them.
Tonight against HON is of course an absolutely must-win affair.
At home to Honduras,Likely in conditions more suited to ice hockey (actually, make that ice fishing) than to soccer. I get that US Soccer wants to plays its central American foes in places with: a) a relatively small immigrant population; and b) in the most inhospitable conditions possible. But at a certain point, this is going to backfire. The Yanks are a much better team than Honduras, and playing in absurdly cold temperatures, if anything, favors the underdog. Plus, the national team is by now sufficiently popular that it can get decent home support even if it played in a more normal climate.

At home to Honduras, I find it hard to imagine the US won't get the job >done. Berhalter has come in for a lot of flack about the loss vs.
Canada, but I think this is not very fair. The US did not qualify last >time, and Berhalter has led them to win both the Nations' league and
Gold Cup. He has brought in a lot of good young players to the fold,
and he has the team poised to qualify for the world cup. Sure, things
can still go wrong, but with a home game vs. Honduras, and Panama having
to play both the US and Mexico away, the chances are they won't.
US played quite well vs. Canada and could easily have won or drawn. We
had to defend fairly desperately at times, and were slightly lucky on
the yellow card front (though one set of stats I saw say we only
committed 10 fouls to 15 from the US ?). US was more aggressive and
quicker to the ball. Dominant as Berhalter suggested? Perhaps not - not >enough shots and only 3 on target, only one of which required a really
good save.
Seems to me there is a lot of arrogance in the criticism of Berhalter, >including the assumption that beating Canada should be a matter of
course. Wake up guys (Hercules Gomez in particular) ! Unlike in the
past, there are about half a dozen guys in the Canadian squad who one
could argue would start for the US. Underestimating opposition is one >reason you didn't qualify last time.
Prediction: 2-0
As for tonight's other matches.
Mexico - Panama. El tri should be able to put some daylight between
them and their opponents, at home in the Azteca. Seems to me Panama
have been punching above their weight, and lack of depth could start to
work against them. Tata is under pressure, though, and, who knows, the >Mexicans could choke. The expression "cagarse" springs to mind.
Prediction 3-1
El Salvdor - Canada. We have not done particularly well there over the >years (better than away to Honduras, though), so I think this could be a >slip up. El Salvador will be confident and riding high after an away
win to arch-rivals Honduras. A Canadian loss would not surprise me and
I would be perfectly happy with a point. Zachary Brault-Girard called
into the squad for Canada - a bit odd as he is a right back and we
already have Laryea and Johnson who can play there. Vitoria suspended.
I heard Buchanan was too, but I checked the yellows and that does not
seem to be true. NO Davies, still no Eustaquio last I heard.
Prediction 1-1
Jamaica - Costa Rica.
Jamaica yet to win at home, though they have had creditable draws with >Canada and the US, and a narrow loss to Mexico. Win this one and their >remaining two home games (El Salvador and Hondurs), and get a point
against a (hopefully already qualified) Canada, and they might just haul >themselves into contention for 4th place. Costa Rica really need this
one too, so it is probably the match of the round. I would guess a draw.
Prediction 1-1

Tonight against HON is of course an absolutely must-win affair.MEX-PAN is even more so for Mexico. Mexico can recover with a victory at Azteca over the United States. But Panama is only one point behind the two, and, hence, in the interconfederational playoff spot.

Oh she looks cold in Minnesota ya. But no snow and it looks a real
grass pitch, must be heated, not even Canadians would be ice fishing
without a heated hut in those temps. It is working though, Hondurans
frozen out, USA ahead 2-0

It worked for us vs. Mexico and Costa Rica. US should be acclimatizedRight, it can make sense for a relative underdog like Canada against Mexico or Costa Rica, not so much when you are the overwhelming favorite. Anyway, USA took care of business, comfortably beating Honduras 3-0. Now watching MEX-PAN, qualification 6-pointer.
after Hamilton on Sunday, where I gather it was quite cold by game time.

Hopefully Panama wins, if only because Mexico should be punished for never wearing their green jersey
