    Aren't grid penalties applied AFTER qualifying? I thought pole is awarded and then the penalty occurs but I don't remember if that is the actual case here. I know it was discussed around how the sprint stuff worked earlier.

    Pole (for official and pool purposes) is awarded to the one who is
    entitled to start the race on pole. That individual might not actually
    start there - car failure before gridding, or spun off during the
    formation lap - but post-qualifying penalties definitely affect "pole."

    There's one new-this-year exception: when sprint qualifying is used,
    official and pool(?) pole goes to the fastest qualifier notwithstanding
    the results of the sprint (which set the race grid).
