after the result has been finalised.

Eleven of those were after the 2nd event of the season - 1950-54,
61-62, 64, 81, 97 & 2017. Four more were after the 3rd event -
1972, 86, 89 & 2007.

On 2 occasions there was a 3-way tie for the WDC lead:

BHR 2007 22 pts Alonso, Raikkonen, Hamilton
GBR 2008 48 Hamilton, Massa, Raikkonen

Bahrain was round 3 of 17 and Britain was round 9 of 18. Drivers are
listed in tie-breaker order based on race results. In 2008 HAM & MAS
had exactly the same results (3 wins each), while Kimi had a single
win.

Verstappen leads Hamilton in 2021 by 9 wins to 8. Worth noting that
VER's last win was the Mexican GP and HAM has won the last three.
VER won 5-4 in the first 11 events, while they are equal 4-4 in the
last 10.

Definitely. It made me wonder about final GPs where there was a small
gap between the top two drivers.

The number of points available for a win makes a difference to what a
small gap was. Essentially from 1950 to 1990 a win was potentially worth
9 points, so I've included gaps which were less than 10.

From 1991 to 2009 a win was worth 10 points, so I've listed gaps less
than 11. Since 2010 wins have been worth 25 pts, so anything less than
26 is listed.

In the seasons from the late 'sixties to 1990 drivers could only count a certain number of their best scores. I have not considered if that
affected the possibility of any listed drivers not being able to win.

Note also that in 1961 the 2nd-placed driver (von Trips) was killed in
the penultimate GP, so Phil Hill was certain of the WDC.
